대한민국을 대표하는 런던 브루넬대학 한국총동문회 회장 박형걸 입니다.

런던 브루넬대학교 한국총동문회는 런던에서의 학업과 추억을 공유한 동문들이 귀국 후에도 지속적인 교류를 이어오며, 현재 대한민국에서 활동 중인 브루넬 동문 커뮤니티를 대표하는 조직으로 자리매김하였습니다. 초기에는 귀국한 디자인 전공 동문 간의 소규모 모임으로 출발하였으나, 점차 다양한 학문 분야의 동문들이 결합하며 규모와 조직 체계를 갖춘 국내 대표 한국총동문회로 성장·정착하였습니다.

현재 동문회 회원들은 전국 각지는 물론 해외에서도 각자의 분야에서 활발한 활동을 이어가며, 사회 전반에 걸쳐 폭넓은 영향력을 발휘하고 있습니다. 동문들은 각자의 자리에서 전문성을 바탕으로 성장하고 있으며, 이러한 개별적 성취는 동문회 전체의 자산이 되고 있습니다.

Brunel University London은 잉글랜드 런던 억스브리지(Uxbridge)에 위치한 공립 연구중심 대학으로, 1966년에 설립되었습니다. 대학명은 빅토리아 시대의 저명한 엔지니어인 이점바드 킹덤 브루넬(Isambard Kingdom Brunel)의 이름에서 유래하였습니다. 1966년 6월, 브루넬 기술 칼리지(Brunel College of Advanced Technology)는 영국 왕실 헌장을 수여받아 정식으로 Brunel University가 되었으며, 이후 2014년 8월 대학 구조 개편과 함께 현재의 명칭인 Brunel University London으로 변경되었습니다.

현재 대학은 3개의 단과대학으로 구성되어 있으며, 16,150명 이상의 학생과 약 2,500명의 교직원이 재직 중입니다. 2019–2020 회계연도 기준 총 수입은 약 2억 3,700만 파운드로, 이 중 약 30%는 정부 보조금 및 연구 계약을 통해 조성되었습니다. 또한 미국, 프랑스, 일본, 호주, 독일, 싱가포르, 이탈리아 등 다양한 국가의 학생들이 재학 및 졸업하고 있으며, 글로벌 동문 네트워크 역시 공식 웹사이트를 통해 활발히 운영되고 있습니다.

런던 브루넬대학교 한국총동문회는 2024년부터 연회비 제도로 전환하여 보다 안정적인 운영 기반을 마련하였습니다. 매년 상반기에는 동문 회원들의 연구실, 사업장, 기관 등을 직접 방문하여 근황을 나누고 상호 교류를 강화하는 번개 모임을 진행하고 있으며, 6월에는 동문회 임원 워크숍을 통해 운영 현황과 향후 발전 방향을 심도 있게 논의하고 있습니다.

또한 비정기적으로 런던 모교의 총장 및 교수진이 서울을 방문하여 동문 디너 행사 등을 개최하고 있으며, 매년 11월~12월에는 브루넬 한국총동문회 총회 및 송년회를 정기적으로 진행하고 있습니다. 이와 함께 디자인 전공 동문들의 전문성을 살린 ‘디자인 전략 세미나’ 등 특화 프로그램을 운영하여 동문회의 질적 성장을 도모하고 있습니다.

브루넬대학교 한국총동문회의 핵심적 역할은 동문 개개인의 사업적·전문적 성장을 상호 지원하고, 동문으로서의 소속감과 런던에서의 소중한 추억을 공유하며, 동문 여러분의 명예와 자긍심을 높이는 데 있습니다. 이는 동문회가 추구하는 가장 우선적인 사명입니다.

앞으로도 런던 브루넬대학교 한국총동문회는 동문 상호 간의 친목과 교류, 실질적인 지원을 바탕으로 함께 발전하고 성장하는 공동체가 될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다.

Greetings from the President of the Brunel University London Korea Alumni Association

My name is Hyung-Geol Park, President of the Brunel University London Korea Alumni Association, representing alumni in the Republic of Korea.

The Brunel University London Korea Alumni Association was formed by graduates who shared their academic experiences and memories in London and have continued their connections after returning to Korea. Over time, the Association has established itself as the representative organization of Brunel alumni actively engaged across Korea. Initially founded as a small gathering of returning alumni from design-related disciplines, the Association has steadily expanded to include graduates from a wide range of academic fields, evolving into a well-structured and nationally recognized alumni organization.

Today, our members are active not only throughout Korea but also across the global community, contributing to society in diverse professional fields. Each alumnus continues to grow within their respective domain, and these individual achievements collectively strengthen the value and reputation of our alumni network. Brunel University London is a public research-intensive university located in Uxbridge, London, England. Established in 1966, the University is named after the renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In June 1966, the Brunel College of Advanced Technology was granted a Royal Charter and formally became Brunel University. Following an institutional restructuring adopted in August 2014, the University assumed its current name, Brunel University London.

The University is organized into three colleges and currently comprises over 16,150 students and approximately 2,500 academic and professional staff members. In the 2019–2020 academic year, the University reported a total income of approximately £237 million, of which around 30 percent was derived from grants and research contracts. Brunel University London attracts students from many advanced nations, including the United States, France, Japan, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Italy, and the United Kingdom, and maintains an active global alumni network through its official alumni platform.

Since 2024, the Brunel University London Korea Alumni Association has transitioned to an annual membership fee system to ensure a more stable and sustainable operational structure. Each year in the first half, the Association conducts informal networking visits to members’ laboratories, businesses, and institutions to share updates and strengthen mutual engagement. In June, an executive workshop is held to review operations and discuss strategies for future development.

In addition, senior leadership and faculty members from Brunel University London periodically visit Seoul, during which alumni dinner events are organized. Toward the end of each year, typically between November and December, the Association convenes its Annual General Meeting and Year-End Gathering. Specialized programs, such as design-focused “Design Strategy Seminars,” are also organized to leverage the professional expertise of alumni and to contribute to the qualitative growth of the Association.

The core mission of the Brunel University London Korea Alumni Association is to support the professional and entrepreneurial growth of its members, to foster a strong sense of belonging among alumni, to share the lasting memories of London, and ultimately to enhance the pride and distinction of being a Brunel graduate. Moving forward, the Brunel University London Korea Alumni Association remains committed to serving as a platform for friendship, exchange, and mutual support, and will continue to make every effort to grow and advance together with its alumni community.
